Gwinnett County To Allow Treated Wastewater For Lawns

With the seasons changing many of us are turning our thoughts to the upcoming summer months and possibly the effect the water bans may have on our lawns.  Currently in Gwinnett County we are not permitted to use any drinking water on our lawns or plants unless they have been installed within the last 30 days.

I read an article today in the AJC that stated that Gwinnett County is the first county to allow highly treated wastewater to be trucked and to be used for the purpose of watering lawns.  This water has not been treated to the same standards of water that would be used for consumption or in our swimming pools, but is perfectly acceptable for use on the lawn and for foundational plants.

Trained and certified truck drivers will be allowed to load up on this water and truck it out to homes or businesses in need of a good watering.  The fees involved include a training session at $100 annual fee and a $25 fee for each truck that hauls the water.  With the price of gas this may not be the most cost effective way to maintain those lush lawns, but two golf courses and other public facilities are using this type of water now.

It is one solution to the problem, and perhaps it will evolve into a more viable and cost effective practice.
